Inter Miami Face Possible Name Change & Neymar Acquisition?

There doesn’t appear to be a day that goes by lately without something of real intrigue and interest happening within Inter Miami. They are gearing up for life in Major League Soccer and while expansion teams tend to have a lot of visibility anyway, it seems to be on a whole other level for David Beckham’s Inter Miami.

As reported by NBC Sports it appears as if their latest issue comes in the form of their name.

“The USPTO found that MLS’ claim that there are a number of clubs around the world that use Inter in their name — SC Internacional of Porto Alegre, Brazil, Inter Nashville FC, Inter Atlanta FC, FC Inter Turku (Finland), NK Inter Zapresic (Croatia), Inter Leipzig (Germany) and Inter de Grand-Goave (Haiti)— did not meet its burden to show that MLS has valid proprietary, or ownership, right in the name, Inter.”

“In effect, it will come down to Inter Milan convincing the USPTO that consumers think of Inter Milan when they hear the term Inter.”

When push comes to shove with this ordeal it’ll come down to whether or not they can convince the courts that ‘Inter’ is not directly associated with Inter Milan and nobody else.

While other clubs may have the name too it certainly seems as if Milan wants to try and make an example out of Miami.

In better news, as reported by MLS Soccer, Brazilian star Neymar has hinted at making the jump over to Inter Miami in the future.

“I told him I will play there one day,” Neymar said.

“I believe this is a great opportunity for the country to grow its soccer,” Neymar added. “As I said before, I already have my contract with David. A few years from now, I will be there.”

He noted this during an interview with Beckham himself as the hype continues to grow for Inter Miami’s entry into the league.

While there is still plenty of things to be worked out regarding the ins and outs of what Inter Miami in the MLS is going to look like, the sheer fact that they’re creating so much noise seems to be appealing enough for fans to gravitate towards them as a team.

Whether or not that’s fair or even makes much sense remains to be seen, but it can surely only mean good things for the continued development of Major League Soccer.

Some people seem to think that this is all being done in the name of David Beckham getting his ego stroked, but we don’t think it’s about that at all.

The Englishman has been able to see first hand what it means for soccer to thrive over in North America, and he wants to be a part of that.

Inter Miami, and Beckham specifically, could serve as two huge components of the growth of the league as well as the sport as we look ahead to the 2026 FIFA World Cup in just over six years time.
