Los Angeles: Kings of the MLS?

While it may be fun to point out which franchises, individually, are doing a good job during any given season or game, it’s almost equally as entertaining to highlight when a city is doing collectively great things from a sporting point of view.

If you want to talk about some of the most influential and impressive cities in the world of not only football, but sports in general, Los Angeles has to be up there. The city of stars is also the city of heroes for a lot of fans around the globe, and that stretches from basketball to American football and beyond. Of course, the likes of the Lakers and the Rams are going to receive most of the attention, but nowadays, there’s more to it than that – and it’s happening over in the MLS.

Making a statement

LAFC and LA Galaxy both have very different histories when it comes to the landscape of American soccer, but in a way, we kind of like that about them. There needs to be some kind of diversity in order to provide fans with different options regarding what team they’re going to get behind and support. Oh, and either way, it seems like a certainty that they’ll be getting fans that are as loyal as they come.

Even if they aren’t, there’s definitely a market for both clubs given the size and stature of Los Angeles as a city. Even the Los Angeles Times is talking about the surge that LA has been on over the course of the last few years, and as we look ahead to the immediate future, it doesn’t seem like there’s any risk of it slowing down anytime soon.

At this moment in time the two teams are currently occupying the primary spots at the top of the Western Conference table, which is about as good of a position as you could ever hope to be in at this stage of the campaign. The franchises have been able to get their heads down, focus on their respective tasks at hand, and execute.

Embrace the haters

Right now nobody is doing it better than them, which leaves us salivating at the prospect of them meeting later down the line. Just listen to the words of Zlatan Ibrahimovic as reported by GiveMeSport recently – this is a man that quite clearly believes in what they’re trying to put together at the Galaxy, and yet, LAFC are the ones who have been tearing through the competition (Galaxy have too, just not quite to the same extent).

Fans of neutral teams often criticise Los Angeles as a whole for not having that much of a soul, but we personally believe that couldn’t be any further from the truth. There’s a lot that they have going for themselves in LA, and it really does feel like they are starting to validate the MLS’ decision to bring two teams to the city.

There’s still work to be done, but if you’re a fan over there, then get ready: because the good times are just beginning.
