Eden Prairie Soccer Club Names Peter Reid to Director of Coaching and Player Development
Eden Prairie, MN (August 18, 2010) – The Eden Prairie Soccer Club (EPSC) named Peter Reid as the organization’s Director of Coaching and Player Development.
“The Eden Prairie Soccer Club is fortunate to have secured the services of Peter Reid as our Director of Coaching,” said Joe Young, EPSC President. Peter is an outstanding coach and trainer, with a proven record of developing accomplished soccer players. We look forward to Peter’s vision, enthusiasm and leadership in helping us continue to build our fine program.”
Reid has been with the EPSC for over three years, initially hired as the coach of a boys U13 team. Under Reid’s guidance, the team achieved Premier status. Following the July 2009 departure of Wayne Harrison, the former Director of Coaching at EPSC, Reid was named Boys Technical Director, overseeing the boys’ program for the Club. In early 2010, Reid was named interim Director of Coaching.
Originally from Liverpool, England, Reid enjoyed success as a youth player, with his high school team winning the prestigious Liverpool Echo Cup in back-to-back seasons. His professional career included invitations and trials with Manchester City and Tranmere Rovers.
Reid is passionate about soccer, and believes in developing players in a low-pressure environment where players gain confidence on the ball and are not afraid to express themselves on the field. Reid has coached top level teams in the Minneapolis metropolitan area for the last ten years.
Reid lives in Richfield, MN with his wife, Trish, and three children.

Congrats Pete!
funny how I heard it here first
What a surprise… another English coach hired as a director of a club. Because everyone knows that there are no qualified coaches that were born in this state. Or America for that matter. I’m sorry, I don’t know Pete, and he may be a great coach, but I think it’s time that we stop importing coaches, and start supporting our local coaches who are every bit as qualified. Dan Barreiro said it best when he said, “you could walk into a youth soccer coaching interview in this state with a cigarette in one hand and a bottle of gin in the other and as long as you have an English accent, you’ll get hired.” I hope Pete has great success, but I’d love to see clubs start doing a better job of supporting local coaches that are just as qualified.
Huh – Peter has been here in the states a very long time. He has done his time and deserves the chance. The mistake EP made was actually trying to import a newbie from England. EP gave this “Ben” a chance and a full 8 months before he had to start and get his Visa in order. What company hires a person and doesn’t expect them to start for 8 months? While at the same time. leaving a person of Pete’s caliber twisting in the wind as a interim DOC. Lets hope the EP Board allows the Pete the control it allowed Wayne Harrison. DOC’s should always have the board working for them not the DOC working for the board.
I dont know anything about Mr. Reid, the EP soccer club, or much about this particular hiring process beside the fact that it has been a pretty drawn out process.
So I’m not going to pass judgement on this specific situation.
But generally speaking, I share Huh’s xenophobic sentiment with regards to providing opportunities to domestic coaches. The quantity of British youth soccer coaches working in this country is staggering.
What does Dan Barreiro know about youth soccer? BTW, that is a pretty funny quote if it’s true of not. I don’t think that’s as true today as it was 10 years ago. There are a lot more qualified home grown coaches than there used to be and a lot of clubs are just picking the best fit for their club.
S & Huh, when I was president of the CC united soccer club, we hired Terry Leinendecker as a DOC- former Johnnie All-American and star Striker keeper from here in the states. We also hired the first women DOC in the state, Kate-Ryan Reiling former Scotts All American right here from St. Paul. Our final DOC hire before I stepped away was Jonthan Tudor Jr. Ok an Englishman. Every hire was done with what our the club’s development needs were at the time and who would be the best candidate to meet current and future needs.
I will make this generalization, the home grown coaching talent here in the states usually approaches soccer coaching as secondary employment and income. They typically all have college degrees with other professional interests. Many original English based coaches pursuing DOC positions in this country are here because of soccer as their first and foremost priority. I would hope most hiring decisions are based upon best candidates meeting the needs of the club
Of course in England they are probably complain about all the Italian coaches taking away chances from the young English coaches.
IMO – the leadership of the EP club is heading it in the wrong direction, being parent desired driven rather than soccer driven. I pray Peter is given the parameters that Wayne was to make the club soccer driven.
Yeah, I also heard the show where Barreiro made that comment. I don’t know how they got on the subject, but they were talking about youth soccer when I turned the radio on. As far as English coaches are concerned, I have a lot of friends from England that are great at what they do and deserve the positions that they have, however, I do think that their accent and place of birth give them an edge when applying for these positions. I know of a couple of English DOC’s in this state who have been let go from 2 or 3 clubs, yet they still get hired by another club. I can’t help but wonder why they keep getting hired.
Congrats to Peter Reid on his new position! Being from Liverpool I hear he is a huge supporter of Everton. I wouldn’t consider this “just another Brit” being given a position of power inside the American youth soccer movement. From what I understand Peter filled in nicely in a tough circumstance at EPSC. Hopefully everything turns out the best for him.
Pete just talks funny, he’s not English. He has fooled people for years with that scam.
He’s originally a farm boy from Gackle ND.
Whewww, if he’s an Everton supporter than he’s OK.
Especially after today. Liverpool gets dumped by City.
Eden Prairie Soccer Club is doing a great job building a quality soccer club. If I lived on that side of town my kids would be playing for EP. Kudos to Joe Young for his efforts!
@BP, thanks for reminding everyone once again that Liverpool played terrible today!
@Soccer Boy – lets give kudos to the proper person. Wayne Harrison built the club to the level it was at. The reason for the success was it was soccer driven by a soccer person. That is why I hope Peter is given the same parameters. I can guarantee you that during his interim DOC time there he was not.
It was almost best the 8 month hiring fiasco occurred with their import from England. It provided time for the large black hole created by Wayne to be softened. Because of this Peter now has a chance to make the program his own.
@tomASS–hey, I am not trying to take anything away from anyone else at EP. I do know that Joe has worked hard on this project. As a former club president myself, I know unpaid volunteers spend a ton of time working on stuff like this. I also know Joe–that is why I wanted to give him some kudos. I have never met Mr. Harrison–I am sure he has worked hard on the project too.
Soccer Boy it is better we just leave at that and agree to allow each of us our own opinion.
Sounds like we can all agree he is an Everton fan.
I have had the pleasure of working with Peter Reid in the capacity as a coach. He is very good at motivating coaches to work to the best of their potential and commit to an overall cause of sound/fundamental technical development. IMO, the decision by the EPSC board to give Mr. Reid the position of DOC is a very positive decision and will bode well for the future of the club.
I’ve learned a lot from reading Wayne’s training documents.
Best of luck to Peter Reid and EPSC.
@HandoHenry – , G-roy, very artful and timeless butt-kissing. Peter will only be able to accomplish what the parent driven board provides him in the way of parameters that he can work. Limited parameters = limited success.
Don’t understand how a good decision like this DOC hiring is starkly contrasted by the EP club’s dismissal of, IMO, one of the better Referee Assignors, Trainers, and Mentors in the area. Some other club would be very wise to pick up this person for developing and nurturing their youth referee programs.
I’m just an outsider looking in; it must be some sort of internal process that blinds my perception and doesn’t overcome my biases
