Evolution of Soccer Balls

by Brian Quarstad

My friend Bruce McGuire of duNord futbol made a post on Thursday that he had discovered a New York Times poster with close-ups of past World Cup balls photographed by Jens Heilmann. If you click on the poster below you will be taken to that NY Times site. Heilmann has done a wonderful job capturing these balls and the slide sh0w gives you a bit of history with each of the balls.

What I also found was a video of how Heilmann came to photograph the ball for a book he made. You can find that right below the poster.

While all this material was produced for the World Cup last summer, I thought I’d share it with you anyway in case you missed it as I had.

Enjoy!

You can get your copy here:

At $679, it’s a steal! Shipping to the US is only $77.41. When I win the lottery, I’m gonna pick up 10 of these.

Funny I remember playing with the 74 World Cup ball when I played for the pumas in little league soccer when I was about 7 or 6 years old and I think I had a 82 World Cup ball aslo. I really love t o have a 38 world cup ball even it is a exact remake.

If you go to the Charleston Battery stadium, try to arrange to have a season ticket holder take you into their authentic British pub. The pub has soccer paraphenalia that includes games balls from all eras, and markings of teams from all over the world, including those of the previous NASL.

    It is very very cool.
