Stars FC Unveil Unique 2012 Uniforms That Honor Minnesota and Supporters

Players Justin Davis (left-gray away jersey), Matt VanOekel (center-red goalkeeper jersey), and Amani Walker (right-home jersey) model the very unique 2012 Stars FC jersey which pays tribute to the state of Minnesota and it's supporters.

“The away jersey numbers are going to blow – your – mind!” stated Ian Leonard, local Fox 9 meteorologist, soccer fan and master of ceremonies for the Minnesota Stars’ FC Shine On video and 2012 kit unveiling.

Leonard, a soccer lover and supporter of the Stars, was describing the new away jersey for the Minnesota Stars FC.

In a recent interview with Stars FC CEO Djorn Buchholz, he stated, “They are unbelievable. The away kit that we’ve done this year is something that I don’t think anyone else in the country, maybe even in the world has done before.”

Player/assistant coach and front office marketing specialist Kevin Friedland, who was the point man for working with kit supplier Admiral and designed both last year’s and this year’s jersey, explained the process.

“Last year, working with Admiral, it was a deal that was turned around very quickly. We paid tribute to the Kicks with the sky blue and orange. That just got my mind going that custom is the way to go. I’m sure they would tell you that I give them many headaches. But I think it’s important because it’s not just our jerseys, it’s not just our fans, but I want the guys who are wearing them to feel comfortable and confident in what they’re wearing. I want them to take pride in wearing the uniform.”

“Two themes for the kits,” continued Friedland. “We wanted to make sure we paid tribute to Minnesota and that we paid tribute to the Dark Clouds and our fans.”

Friedland did that by creating, as Buchholz had stated, perhaps one of the most unique away jerseys ever created. And true to his word the home jersey pays tribute to the state of Minnesota.

Friedland's #6 jersey is just one of the 10 unique numbers on the back of this year's away jersey, each capturing in photos the Dark Cloud supporters.

The away kit is all gray with light blue, dark blue and gold highlights. The gold highlight on the neck states “Stars FC,” and just below that sits the cartoonish Dark Clouds logo. The tail of the jersey states the Dark Clouds motto, “Everywhere We Go… Dark Clouds Follow.”

But perhaps most unique as Leonard had stated, was the away number. Each number, 0-9, is made up of a unique photograph of the Stars supporters group, the Dark Clouds. So the fans will literally travel with the team on the road.

The navy home kit also has lots of unique highlights and features. The primary colors of navy blue and gold with light blue highlights are back again this season. Admiral is the key sponsor on the jersey and the sleeves carry the NASL and Planet Soccer logos.

Unique to both the home and the away jersey is a special “NASL CHAMPION” logo on the center of the chest that the Stars will wear all season for being the 2011 NASL Champion. The special logo also has an image of the new SoccerBowl trophy that was commissioned by the league last season.

Like the away jersey, the home also has “Stars FC” on the neck with the Admiral logo just below it. The unique numbers have streaks running through them which is picked up from the streaks in the star on the new logo that the team designed this past winter.

As Friedland stated, the kit also pays tribute to Minnesota by having cutouts of the state in each letter and the tail of the jersey carries the state motto, “L’Étoile du Nord,” meaning “the star of the north.”

The jerseys were a huge hit with the large crowd that had filled up the room at Brit’s Pub and many orders for jerseys were taken. Other merchandise for the team was also available and will be for sale online as well.

Congratulations! You win! That is probably the coolest kit in the league and I was loving the Rowdies as I grew up as an original NASL kid and it brought back such happy memories. It gives me hope that the Islanders may get something decent as they went with Admiral this year as well. (However, I don’t think they have nearly the developed fan culture nor creativity that these kits exhibit.) Kudos to the Stars FC and their fans!

Even outside of the special number concept, those are among the best looking football kits I’ve ever seen. They’re fantastic!

AMAZING!!!! I have never bought both the away and home kits of any soccer team before, but I probably will for this.

Bummed I could not make it to the event last night. I had a positive reaction to seeing the photos and I look forward to seeing them in person today. Great work Stars. The Year of the Ugly Kit is not present in Minnesota.

The kits look great and the attention to detail has paid off.

I know Corinthians in Brazil have in the past made up their numbers from a montage of fans pictures, but I think the images in the Starts numbers look much better.

Sub Side Sports in the UK has been handing out a Shirt of the Year award for a few years now that seems to slowly getting more attention. Someone needs to make a point of submitting this kit for consideration (though I’ve no idea how that would be done).

Davis and Wasson had the kits on today at Peavy Plaza. In my book the went from “pretty cool” to “must have” in about 10 seconds. The away kit is cooler than the home kit. In my opinion.

I also had a chance to talk to Justin Davis. This is something I really have not had a chance to do before today. To me he fits into the Stars mold of being very friendly, very personable and an all around great footballer. He was excited to be a part of the team and had a great outlook for the upcoming campaign. (Oh, Davis has a good sense of humor. He said he wants to contribute to the effort by scoring more goals this season. I asked him, “In their net, not ours, right?” He laughed.)

Nice subtext for finding a non-league owner, too. “Look at our great support, you can build on this!”

That was the subtext of the last Shine On episode for 2011 as well that was shown last night. Hopefully that will be up later today or tomorrow. Great video that does exactly that, rides on the concept of this area having a long history of pro soccer and the support that is there.

What? No hoops? Seriously though, nice! I especially like the away kit, very sharp. That’s how you design a uniform; start clean and simple, then enhance without going overboard. Even the keeper kit looks good. He stands out distinctly from his teammates, exactly as he should.

Very cool, well done Minnesota and Admiral! Dark Clouds photos on the away numbers are really cool, and all the details on both are great. The “Nessy” is so awesome.

There are some GREAT uniforms in the NASL this year, most better than anything in MLS in my opinion. These super cool Stars shirts, the very modern, professional kits in Edmonton, sharp stuff in ATL and San Antonio and classic NASL goodness down here in Fort Lauderdale and Tampa Bay. Only the orange teams, PR and Carolina get a solid “meh” from me.

NASL 2012 will be a feast for the eyes!

They look great. But I really liked that Kicks honoring alternate jersey from last year. Great job Stars and Admiral.

I wonder how many will be at the dome to see the new jerseys. Who schedules a game like this on Holy Saturday and also Passover. I think many families will choose not to go because they will be working all night to get ready for relatives comimng over.

Etch, all the other sports are plying today or tonight? This is a league opener, not just a Stars opener. Also, over 5,500 tickets had been presold on Friday so I’m guessing at least 6,500 people will choose to go.

Also, did you know you are on one of the numbers? I can’t remember which one but you are in there somewhere.
